Eating a balanced diet
Eating a healthy diet, balanced with all the key nutrients is the best way to achieve a safe and gradual weight loss. A starting place for understanding how to eat healthy is Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide which has been designed by Health Canada. Some tips that can help are:
- Eat small meals and snacks every 3 hours
- Chew well and eat slowly
- Get more fruits, vegetables and whole grains that are rich in fiber
- Exercise regularly
You should aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds in a week, and not more than that.
Other methods of weight loss will be also discussed and updated on regular basis. Here are some examples.
Weight loss pills and injections
Many weight loss pills exist that help in weight loss may not be safe. A new injection called Saxenda is awaiting approval from Health Canada, but has already been approved in the US. The injection as per studies may be safer than most other weight loss pills. Saxenda will be the newest method of weight loss in Canada, if approved.
Weight loss procedures
Bariatric surgery is on the rise as the preferred way to treat obesity. There are many types of bariatric surgery and the physician is the best person to decide which method will be the best suited for you. The types of bariatric procedures include:
- Adjustable gastric banding: A band is placed around the upper stomach which limits the food intake due to reduced size of the stomach.
- Sleeve gastrectomy: In this surgery which requires hospitalization, 80% of the stomach is removed and a sleeve like stomach is left behind.
- Gastric bypass: In this the food enters the latter part of the small intestine instead of going through the stomach.
